Library Media Specialist

Job Summary

The Library Media Specialist is responsible for developing, promoting, and managing a comprehensive library media program that supports the school’s curriculum, fosters a love of reading, and ensures students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This position requires collaboration with teachers to integrate resources and information literacy skills into instruction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Management and Administration

  • Collection Development and Curation: Select, acquire, and manage a diverse collection of print, non-print, and digital resources that supports the curriculum and represents various cultures, experiences, and viewpoints.
  • Organization and Access: Catalog, classify, and organize all materials using standard library practices to ensure easy access for all patrons.
  • Budget Management: Prepare and administer the library media budget to support program goals and ensure fiscal accountability.
  • Facility Management: Maintain a functional, inviting, and well-organized library environment. Oversee the use and security of library equipment and facilities.
  • Policy and Law: Adhere to all district, state, and federal laws and policies, including those pertaining to copyright, intellectual property, digital citizenship, and the confidentiality of library records.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: A Master’s degree in School Library Media or Library Media and Information Technologies from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Must possess a valid Arkansas Teaching License with the appropriate Library Media Specialist endorsement (P-12), or be willing/able to obtain.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of library media management principles, including cataloging, collection development, and circulation systems.
  • Proficiency in educational technology, digital resources, and information retrieval systems.
  • Excellent written and oral communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, parents, faculty, staff, and the community.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Commitment to continuous professional learning and growth.
